Facts and Events
From "Peckinpaughs, Pickenpaughs, Beckenbaughs, Peckinpahs and Peckenpaughs, Descendants of Johann Adam and Anna Maria Beckenbach", by Edwin T. & Altha Peckenpaugh Brace, Gateway Press, Baltimore, MD, 1984, pg. 11: Mary Beckenbach, born between 1743 and 1747, may be the Anna Maria mentioned in Reformed Church records, but most of these definetely refer to her mother. We do not know her baptismal name, but the 1778 deed records name her as Mary Beckenbach, spinster. However, on the back of a deed to her, was a note, "Examined and returned to Mr. Andrew Lowe, 14th April 1779", so we may be sure she is the Mary Beckenbach who according to the marriage records of the Reformed Church of Frederick County, Maryland, married Andrew Lowe 19 July 1778. And we have her will, dated 4 Nov 1822, and probated 19 Nov. 1822, leaving her entire estate to her daughter, Catherine Houck, wife of Jacob Houck of Rockingham County, Virginia. The income was to be paid to Catherine during her life, and at her death the money was to be divided so that Cyrus Houck would get 2 parts, and each of the other grandchildren 1 part of the equal parts into which the money was to be divided. Should Cyrus not survive his mother, the other grandchildren, the children of Catherine Houck, would all receive equal shares. The executors were Jacob Houck of Rockingham County, Virginia, and George Houck of Frederick County, Maryland. Witnesses were George Rice, Charles Keller and Ezra Houck". The will refers to a half lot of ground in Frederick Town, adjoining the property of George Houck, Henry Getzendamer, Michael Ott and Catherine Keller, the 2 houses and other buildings thereon erected, also cash, bonds, notes, accounts and evidence of debt of any description, household and kitchen furniture, bedding, etc. Everything was to be exposed to public sale as soon as possible. The proceeds were to be put at interest and the income paid to Catherine Houck. Catherine was to take as much of her clothing as desired, the residue guven to Mary Geyer. In the administration of Mary Lowe's estate, 16 December 1822 - 22 September 1823, among the charges were small amounts paid to women who attended Mary in her last illness. Among those named was Elizabeth Hase, whose first husband was George Beckenbach, son of George Leonhardt Beckenbach. Her sister, Eve Catherine Zimmerman, married George's brother Jacob Beckenbach.
