Facts and Events
According to the Sallie DeWitt 1981 Genealogy, A.T. attended schools in Ft. Smith and Cavanaugh Arkansas, and at San Perlita, Texas. He served in WWII in the 7th Marine Division and was wounded in Okinawa, recieving the Purple Heart. He was also with the occupational forces at Osaka, Japan. After the war he was a successful farmer and owned land, and lived inRa ymondville, Texas. His two sons were ages 9 and 16 when their father died. The story I remember hearing (Jerry D. Abshier, November 2000) was that A.T. DeWitt died in his pickup truck, probably of carbon monoxide poisoning. The details were sketchy, but evidently he pulled to the side of the road to sleep and made the fatal mistake of smoking beforehand. The cigarette evidently smouldered in the upholstery of the pickup and produced enough fumes so that he was found dead the next day. The cause of death listed in the Sallie DeWitt 1981 Genealogy was "truck accident". I have in my possession a copy of a letter from Lee, his father, lamenting the death of his son. He was interred at Raymondville Cemetery. References
