According to the Sallie DeWitt 1981 Genealogy, Ruth was both housewife and businesswoman and had a heart as big as the mountains! She attended schools in Ft. Smith, Arkansas and St. Louis, Missouri before moving to Raymondville, Texas with her family. In Raymondville, she was introduced to 'Webb' by Mrs. Ruben Nelson Parham (Ellie), who had moved to Texas from Mississippi about the same time as the DeWitt family. After WWII, Ruth and Webb made their home in Corpus Christi, Texas.

During the periods from 1950 to 1955 and from 1964 to 1968, all the daughters of Lee and Claudia DeWitt lived in Corpus. Lucille Hodgens (Boss), Luella Mills Deed), Ruth Beachum and Sallie Butler would get together regularly for a visit over a cup of coffee (note from Jerry D. Abshier - I think Sallie overlooked Nellie Abshier, who was also a daughter of Lee and Claudia DeWitt, who lived in California). They all looked forward to a visit with Mama and Papa on any weekend that they could make the 225 mile round trip. According to Sallie, Ruth was a beautiful girl who loved children and yearned for her own.

Ruth Ellen died of a cerebral hemorrhage, according to the Sallie DeWitt 1981 genealogy. She was interred at the Raymondville Cemetery, and her funeral service was held at the First Baptist Church, in Raymondville, Texas.
