Facts and Events
Birth, death, and marriage dates are all taken from her tombstone. Information is confirmed with handwritten family history from Don Stevenson, grandson of James Clemmons McManners, and family tree records from 1970. Listed in the 1850 Houston County, Texas Census as Adelia Hagin, age 14, born Houston County. Wit parents and siblings. Listed in the 1860 Houston County, Texas Census as Adelia, age 23, born TX. With husband and children. The story passed down through the family is that Noah first married a Cherokee indian (have heard she was both full blood and half breed). Texana next married Noah, and raised his children by his first wife as if they were her own--an amazing thing for a woman to do since they were part Indian in 1800s Texas. However, the dates of the children's births don't support this theory. If the marriage date for Noah and Texana is correct, then they are Texana's children--unless the Cherokee indian was actually his mistress...Tahlequah, Oklahoma maintains records on the Cherokee. According to a typed family tree from Lillian (?), given to Donna (Stephens) Davis, "Louisiana (Hagan) Wright in 1882 wrote that Noah McManners died while in service in the Confederate Army and Adelia died eight months later of consumption. She said Adelia left five small children who lived with her until grown, and that two were married. A family record names six children, perhaps one died before Adelia or lived with someone besides Louisiana. These named were: James Clemson, b. Nov. 7, 1853; Louis William, b. Jan. 22, 1855; Arthur T., b. Oct. 7, 1856; Laura Ann, b. Feb. 1, 1858; Margaret Virginia, b. July 30, 1860, m. Robert Marion Stephens; Rosa, b. Nov. 1861." |
