Facts and Events
Abigail met Millard Fillmore when she was his teacher at the academy in New Hope, NY. They married seven years later when she was 27. The Fillmores moves to Washington in 1849 when Millard became Vice President. Only 16 months later, after Zachary Taylor's death, they moved into the White House. Abigail delegated most of her hostess duties to her 18 year old daughter, "Abby", during their White House tenure. She caught a cold at the inaugural ceremonies for Franklin Pierce. It became pneumonia, and she died just 23 days after leaving the White House. References
