Genealogy Report for John Zent and Barbara Shuey:

Descendants of John Zent

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN4 ZENT (JOHANN JACOB G.3, HANS JACOB2 ZEND, JOHANN MARTIN1) was born Abt. 1767 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and died 05 Dec 1847 in Knox County, Ohio1. He married BARBARA SHUEY Abt. 1784 in Pennsylvania, daughter of JOHANNAS SHUEY and CATHARINE CONRAD. She was born Bef. 1766 in Pennsylvania, and died Aft. 1860 in prob. Morrow County, Ohio.

Notes for JOHN ZENT: Family tradition and some accounts claim that John died at the age of 107. It would appear that this account is in error, based upon sources found to date.

John served in the Pennsylvania Militia 1790-1800 in Colonel Valentine Shoufflers Regiment No. 4 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. (Penn Archives 6th series, Vol. 5, p. 289)

1790 Census, Dauphin County, PA lists:

John Lentz (s/b Zent?) with: 1 male 16+, 2 females (note: this listing is on same page as Martin, Ludwig and Christian Shuey) This listing also would have agreed with John's family in 1790 before his son Jacob was born. At the time, John and Barbara had 1 daughter, Betsey, born in 1788.

John and his family moved to Knox County, Ohio, between 1800 and 1803 (possibly later in light of 1810 Census listing in Dauphin County, PA); he was a farmer. John was listed as Johannes Aent filed in Wheeling, West Virginia.

1810 Census, Hanover Township, Dauphin County, PA - 1 female 26-45, 1 female over 45, 2 males under 10, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 26-45. (Listed as John Zantz).

John was listed as the third settler of Jefferson Township; he came to Jefferson Township (in 1810) and settled west of Bellville a short distance. (SW 1/4 of section 7) (History of Richland County, Ohio - Biographical Sketch of Jefferson Township, p 814)

Children of JOHN ZENT and BARBARA SHUEY are:

  • i. JACOB5 ZENT, b. 1784, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania2; d. 1878, Warren, Indiana2; m. (1) UNNAMED SPOUSE; m. (2) SARAH A. COON, Abt. 1818, prob. Richland County, Ohio; b. Abt. 1797, Pennsylvania2; d. 02 Sep 1852, prob. Huntington County, Indiana.

Notes for JACOB ZENT: This may be the Jacob Zent that served as a private from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in "A" Company, Infantry under Capt. John B. Moorhead in the war of 1812-1814. (Pennsylvania Archives 6th series, Vol. 8, p.901)

Hello,

I saw your query on the Zent family on the Knox County Ohio web

page. I don't believe I have ever responded to you. I am also looking into ZENT family in Knox County. My great great grandfather, John Zent was born in an unknown town in Knox county on 12/27/1827. I believe his father was Daniel. John spent some of his years in Huntington County Indiana.

If you know more about his family, I would appreciate communicating

with you.
