  4. Surgeons report aboard the Gloucester "The measles nearly caused the destructio n of every child in the ship. In May we had 43 cases of measles, in June 9 cas es. The children wereweakened by the illness. They had nearly all beenweaned . They were teething. We were becalmed for 9 days a few miles north in the liu e? where the weather was most sultry ....... from all these causes the digestiv e ...the children failed ....and no hard preserved milk farinaceous food or any t hing else I could not procue appeared to nourish them daily they wasted away an d gradually died - in the extremity of my distress at seeing so many children di e under my care i set a baker to work and have had bread baked daily since the 1 st of June. I ...... that the baker should have a pound for his trouble ....... " John and Sarah lost their son William and had to bury him on the Banks of the To rrents river two days before they moored in Port Adelaide
