Source for Birth Dates of Children

The only child in this family whose birth is recorded in published vital statistics is Thomas, who was born in Hartford in 1670. Judge Savage[1] and Rev. Morse[2] are in general but not complete agreement on dates for the earlier children. Rev. Morse, who is not always the most reliable, tells us that James Richards was in England for much of the time between 1652 and 1662 before coming back to Hartford. He then gives dates of birth for each of the eleven children of this couple citing Richards' family bible "now in the Genealogical Library, Boston." It is likely that he referred to the library of the New England Historical Genealogical Society and possible that the bible survives.

If your heart have had any recoylinge aboute it, since your departure, you may againe revolve it in your thoughts, and se whether Providence may not speake some thinge."
[The assumption of this source, naturally, would be that this letter is talking about a dowry for his daughter Sarah. However, given the letter's date in 1654 (William Gibbons died in 1655) and Sarah's birth in 1645 (Hartford Town Records), one wonders. On the other hand, based on the birth of daughter Sarah on 23 Feb 1661/62, the marriage clearly occurred before Sarah was of legal age.] William Gibbons' will of 26 February 1654/55 also names a daughter, Mary, also under 18 years of age. Since Mary is named first, the likelihood is that she was older and a match between her and James Richards may have been contemplated.
