Footnotes

  1. This land was taken up by warrant in 1787 in Sadsbury. The location of the land suggests that this James is kin to Hugh Cowan of the Octoraro. There are several James Cowans in his line. Some can be excluded because their either died earlier than this land warrant (e.g., James son of Hugh, who died in 1751), or would have been too young to have taken up land in 1786 (James (21) born in 1777, and James (22) born in 1775). James (23) born 1767 is a reasonable possibility. He is thought to have moved to Cumberland County, but the date of that removal is unknown.
