Willis YDNA Project Data Extracted 13 march 2011

Commentary

The following data were calculated from YDNA data developed in the Willis Surname YDNA project at Family Tree, (See source above) using the yONE program.

yONE compares the YDNA results for a single individual (in this case kit 64544, whose owner traces his descent to Abner Willis and Eve Sifers of Southwest Virginia). All other YDNA test results in the sample are compared to this "target" kit. The second to last column gives a "dissimilarity coefficient" based on a "One Step YDNA Model". The last column gives a dissimilarity coefficient based on a "Multiple Step YDNA Model". Each of these columns shows the degree of dissimilarity between the target ket, and the kit in the far left hand column. The greater the value, the greater the dissimilarity. The smaller the value, the closer the similarity. In general, small values imply a close genealogical relationship between the descendants being compared.

Overall, an OneStep Model result of more than about 13 percent dissimilarity probably means that any family connection lies further back than most people can recover supporting genealogical data. The 13 percent critieria is only a rough guideline. Some family lines show better surviving documentation than others and it may be possible in these cases to trace a connection for people with more than a 13% dissimilarity. Also, these results are quite sensitive to the number of markers available for connection. Adding additional markers to a 12-marker test may greatly affect results. Roughly speaking, an improvement in results requires a doubling of the number of markers being tested. Finally, some markers are "fast-movers", and mutate at a faster rate than others. A comparison of kits whose mutational differences are confined to "fast-mover" markers may give deceptive results.

The significance of calculations based on the OneStep and on the MultiStep models is not clear[1]. The OneStep model is based on an assumption that when comparing the same marker in different test subjects, any change represents a single mutation. The MultiStep model assumes that a change involving an increment greater than one represents multiple mutations. The MultiStep YDNA model calculation gives results that are simlar, but not identical to, the OneStep model.
