Banta Surname [7 March 2009]

Hello Tammy - welcome to WeRelate! I wanted to let you know that just yesterday, I merged quite a few pages from another user with the Banta Surname. Here is one page that you have in common Family:Albert Banta and Magdalena Van Voorhees (1) and Family:Albert Banta and Magdalena Van Voorhees (3). We are in the process of merging pages such as this in order to eliminate duplicates, so you may be getting some automatic notices!

By the way, I am a volunteer admin here, so if you have any questions, please feel free to post a question on my talk page.

Have fun!--Jennifer (JBS66) 17:10, 7 March 2009 (EST)

Correcting a place page title. [8 March 2009]

(What I thought I would do is copy this from my User page and keep the conversation here so that you can reference it easier)

I need help with a title for a place page. I edited the page but the title on the person's page did not change. I am starting with one peron and I started with my grandfather [1]under his death it reads Maplewood Cemetery I need it to read North Arkansas Medical Center. When you click the link the page has the correct title. How do I fix it.--I not use to working with html so this is all new to me.Tami

Place pages are intended for Towns, Counties, States, Countries, and Cemeteries, not for other locations such as hospitals. What I would suggest for your grandfather's page is that you put the TOWN this hospital is located in (Harrison, Boone, Arkansas, United States) into the Place field, and then put the name of the hospital in the description field. You will then need to delete the Place page that you created. Stop by our Place Portal for more details on Place Page titles in general.

Just as an FYI, the link you spoke of above was this:

North Arkansas Medical Center Harrison, Boone, Arkansas, United States|Maplewood Cemetary, Harrison, Arkansas.

See the pipe | ? Think of it like this: WeRelate's Page Name|My Own Page Name. This will link to WeRelate's Page name, but with the pipe, it will display the words after the pipe on your page. You will find this a lot when you have a Place that is in a different format then our titling convention.--Jennifer (JBS66) 09:13, 8 March 2009 (EDT)

Merge Source [8 March 2009]

I started working on my grandfathers page and noticed that not only his page but several of my pages have duplicate sources. How do you decied which one to keep and which to remove if you have are the same record (1920 U.S. Census Records) but have different "updated" dates?--Tami 04:14, 8 March 2009 (EDT)

It appears that you have duplicate sources because of multiple GEDCOMs that you may have uploaded. What we try to do is source back to an original document, not a source that is the result of another's GEDCOM. So, in the case of a 1920 census, you could do the following:

  • Find/Create a Source page that follows this format: United States, State, County. YYYY U.S. Census Population Schedule

(Here is the help page on Source page titles). (Here is an example of a County Census Source Page)

Then, you could consolidate all of the 1920 census information under one Source Citation and get rid of the extra 'stuff' that Ancestry threw in there. You should only need one reference for the 1920 Census on your grandfather's page. That would contain things like roll number, page, etc. Here is a page that shows good examples of how simple census source citations can be (see down at the bottom, under Sources).

I realize this is a lot of information! Take it one step at a time, like working just on your grandfather's page. It can be overwhelming at first, but please feel free to ask questions!

Enjoy!--Jennifer (JBS66) 09:13, 8 March 2009 (EDT)

Wondering how to begin? [15 March 2009]

Let me tell you a little about myself first and why I began my genealogy quest.

My mom married my dad when he was 60 and when I was was born he was 62. My dad Paul Banta (1)died when I was not even three months old. So i grew up with this question of who was my father. My mom remarried when I was 6 and my step-father did not like the idea of my mom still having apart in my dad's family. So I saw little of my aunt and uncles that were alive.
I also grew up with my grandfather telling us stories of him being a young hobo after he ran away from an orphanage at the age of 12 because his step-father did not want him. After my first husband and i started thinking of starting a family I did not want to have to tell my kids I had no idea who my father was or were he came from. So I join ancestry.com.
I have found a lot of information but I have also come to some brick walls (more on them later). But then I ran into the problem of having so many conflicting information on this person or that person. Now I am trying to sift through my sources and get them organized. Boy I had no idea what I was in for and still am facing.
So here I am. I found this site by pure accident I was looking for a surname found someones blog and a link to here. So now I am very slowing learning html so if you see mistakes please feel free to help me along. If you see mistakes in my work in both page format and genealogy information let me know and I will try to get it fixed.
I know know where to begin one person at a time. So I am starting with my grandfather. I have tried to indent and include an internal link so i will have to see how the worked. Please don't look at my spelling and grammer mistakes I am doing good trying to get this html stuff down.

Wish me Luck! Mom to 3 Jewels.

Growl, snarling @#$%^&$ Grrr not what I was trying to do at all!

Tried to indent the frist line not the whole paragragh and the link did not go where I wanted it to go.

Paul Banta (1)|Paul Banta--Tami 03:39, 15 March 2009 (EDT)

Hello Tami,

The : before each paragraph tells it to indent, so if you want to indent only the first line, only put a colon there.

Regarding links: Paul Banta. The only thing that was a problem in your link was using Person| instead of Person:, the rest of it was great!

Here is a link to our Formatting Help or another, more condensed version at Wikipedia. I hope this helps!--Jennifer (JBS66) 11:44, 15 March 2009 (EDT)

Taking a break til May 2009 [23 March 2009]

Hello all,

I am taking a break from genealogy stuff until sometime in May or June. My husband is returning for his year hardship tour in Camp Casey, Korea the second week in April. The movers are coming three days before my hubby gets home and then we are going to spend two weeks in Harrison, Arkansas before we travel to our new PCS (Permenat Change of Station) in Fort Hood, Texas.

Just to let everyone know I will be taking picture of my family member's gravestone in Maplewood Cemetary in Harrison, Boone, Arkansas and would be happy to take pictures if you have family members buried there.

I am also going to be gathering some family stories from my mom and aunts, as well as scanning some family photos. So hopefully come June I will have some good content to add to my pages and I am sure I will be needing help.

If you have any questions about my page feel free to drop me an email any time I will be checking my email daily.

Elizabeth Stine (2) has problems [24 December 2009]

I ran across this when volunteering on the duplicate list. You show Elizabeth married to three different Banta men, including her own son (or her father-in-law depending on which is correct.) I see that your Ancestry tree has the same problem so that didn't help. I'll have to toss this one back to you to straighten out. You should be able to find some help on Ancestry. --Judy (jlanoux) 17:30, 24 December 2009 (EST) (WeRelate volunteer)

FYI, Ancestry Trees are NOT sources of "primary quality". At most they are of "secondary quality", and can't be relied on. Also, since the Ancestry member tree's that you point to are private, not public, the documentation they contain can't be independently see, or verified. Q 16:48, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
