Next step: Review your GEDCOM [10 November 2010]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Jesse Boughton Family.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Can't edit Gedcom. [21 November 2010]

The first time I downloaded a gedcom, I could edit my people and families. On this second gedcom, the edit on the left side of the page is missing. What happened to it? The only way to resolve the warnings is to do it on my desktop program and then reload the gedcom, even if I only want to make a single change.--Ruth L 17:12, 20 November 2010 (EST)

Hi Ruth, I have moved your message here to make it easier for you to follow.
A new release has been installed which changes the way things work. I was just about to write you a note about this because your file was loaded before the install and therefore you are caught in the transition.

What I would like to do is go forward and import your file with your promise that you will continue to fix the problems. You will also have to review your duplicate list the day after import (the list is generated at night) to finish merging your duplicates. You can now print the warning list from the Warnings tab. So here's the steps:

  1. Print your warning list to save the info
  2. Reply here to let me know you are ready for import (or use the Import tab if available)
  3. After you get the import email, work on the warnings (you may want to review your estimates, you have a lot of alt dates)
  4. Let one night pass and then go to MyRelate, Show Duplicates and work on your merges.
We are trying to automate the gedcoms some more to reduce admin time required (it has been really excessive). We hope to let users self-police, printing warnings and fixing and reloading until they get an acceptable file. WeRelate is the only wiki to allow gedcom import, and we must set some standards to protect the quality of the wiki.
Just ask here if you have any questions, I'll be watching. --Judy (jlanoux) 12:16, 21 November 2010 (EST) (WeRelate volunteer)

The import is running now. Please use your printed warning list to finish tidying up your pages. Also, the duplicate check will run tonight (and every night). Please return tomorrow or soon to view your duplicate list and take care of any merges. Thank you and I apologize for the inconvenience. In the future, you will be able to self-police to some extent. Fix any problems in your personal file and upload a fresh gedcom to get the warnings taken care of. --Judy (jlanoux) 17:41, 21 November 2010 (EST)

Importing Gedcom [21 November 2010]

Judy, I read your message. I printed off the warnings. I also went through the family matches. As far as I can tell, it is ready for import. If there is anything else I need to do, please let me know.--Ruth L 16:41, 21 November 2010 (EST)
