Next step: Review your GEDCOM [30 December 2010]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded base geneanet 30 12 2010.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Gedcom uploads [25 January 2011]

Hello Redzji, I am a volunteer admin here at WeRelate. I've noticed that you have uploaded a few gedcoms. In addition to the warnings that I am sure you have seen, there are two other items that are particular to Dutch gedcoms for you to be aware of.

  1. Alternate names: Names entered like Keetje Knendele Levie Liepman (Keremedir)( Kormedimer)Koe do not work well with this system. I am not sure which software program you use, but alternate names need to be specified on separate lines, with only the primary spelling in the Given and Surname fields.
  2. Places: If you plan to import more than 1 gedcom to WeRelate, it will be much easier for you to edit your places globally in your home software. You will need to add Provincie, Netherlands or Provincie, Nederland to your places in order for the software to match them.

Feel free to post here if you have any questions! --Jennifer (JBS66) 15:08, 8 January 2011 (EST)

Hello Jennifer,

In answer at your email below: What you ask about province and country is an unrealistic job. I have over 1200 names in my GEDCOM, In not any sheet are the province and country mentioned. That means that I have to add manually in more than 1200 data sheets 2 new items, only for placing my GEDCOM in WeRelate !

The software I use is Aldfaer (most used system in the Netherlands. I can make a copy to MyHeritage which is using Family Tree Builder, but my experience with that programm is that in the GEDCOM that is produced, is placed a serie codes in the notice and resp. marriage field. This is an undesirable pollution of data). Aldfaer doesn't have special lines for the alternate written names. In principe I could place these alternate names in the Notice field. But if the first mentioned problem (province and country name) need to be solved, which is no option, it's also not worth to do effort for this point.

I tried to place three times now my GEDCOM with WeRelate, every time after making corrections in my data conform the errors mentioned by your system. I am not planning to place more GEDCOMs. One correct version is enough.

Referring to point one it looks that I have to cancell my attemps to place a GEDCOM at WeRelate ! Please let me know if you see other opportunities . Best regards Reginald

Reginald,

Regarding place names: I know that Aldfaer has the ability to globally "search and replace" place text. Some of our Dutch users prefer this method, especially if they know they will be uploading more then one gedcom. You can search by going to Stamboom>Onderhoud>Plaats, search for a town, and replace that town with town, provincie, Nederland - and it will change all occurrences of this in your database. There is another option, however. You can match your places from within the gedcom upload process. This would be a last step, as you don't want to do this more then once.

Regarding MyHeritage: WeRelate has edited their software to ignore the UID and RIN codes that I believe you are speaking about.

Alternate names: I see that Aldfaer does not have fields for alternate names. I consulted with another Dutch user of Aldfaer, and he said his solution has also been to enter these names into the note field.

You mentioned that you have tried to place your gedcom 3 times. I hope that you have found WeRelate's error checking system to be helpful. We are aware that some "errors" that are common in Dutch gedcoms are not really errors at all. One such is the birth before marriage warning. The goal is not to get your warning percentage to 0% - but more to become aware of and fix the true errors in data.

Lastly, you said "In not any sheet are the province and country mentioned", no it is not. I am finding this is particular to Dutch gedcoms, as most other gedcoms are imported with at least the country or state in the case of U.S. I hope that in the future we can create a Dutch guide to uploading gedcoms, but I think we'll need more Dutch volunteers for that...

Let me know if I can be of any more help, --Jennifer (JBS66) 06:12, 10 January 2011 (EST)

Edits made to pages prior to gedcom upload [10 February 2011]

Reginald, your gedcom has now been successfully imported. When reviewing and matching the places in your gedcom, I made edits to the following pages. I hope that each are correct, if I have made any errors, I apologize!

Regards,--Jennifer (JBS66) 17:54, 1 February 2011 (EST)

Hello Jennifer

I edited the corrections you made in the places. Thanks for your corrections. The last place in your list Ommen is situated in the province Overijssel not in Drenthe the additional text Ambt may be a a sub earea of Ommen

I will start now to work with the (my) pages in Werelate--Redzji 05:13, 10 February 2011 (EST)

Ah yes, I see now. Since she was married in Drenthe, and the place in Genlias said only Ommen, I wasn't sure which Ommen it was. I looked at her parent's marriage certificate and it says: "Grietje geboren te Ambt Ommen den veertienden July Achttien honderd zes en zestig". --Jennifer (JBS66) 05:34, 10 February 2011 (EST)

Dear Jennifer I see now your message of 20 05 2013. Did not receive a mail so far I can find.

Is it possible to download the complete Gedcom I uploaded in Mai. After ahardware crash this week is the WeRelate Gedcom my latest one.

When I use the export button I only get a part of the Gedcom--Redzji 02:52, 23 June 2013 (EDT)

Hi Reginald, let me address your GEDCOM export question first. The file that you uploaded in May is still in "GEDCOM review". Since it has not been completely processed, it is not available to export through WR. The GEDCOM from May contained about 2189 people - is this the file you would like a copy of? I would need to ask Dallan, but it may be possible for him to retrieve this for you. --Jennifer (JBS66) 06:43, 23 June 2013 (EDT)

Dear Jennifer

Yes that's the last extern Gedcom I have uploaded. All at other places are older. So if it's possible to return this one as a download, I will be very happy.

I did reapir the faults, so I will have to do that again. Bigger problem are the pictures etc. will take months for me to complete that part--Redzji 08:24, 23 June 2013 (EDT)

Gedcom of 20 05 2013 [25 June 2013]

I sent Dallan an email yesterday about your GEDCOM and have not received a response yet. As soon as Dallan gets back to me, I will let you know :) --Jennifer (JBS66) 12:04, 24 June 2013 (EDT)

Dallan wrote back and said that he will contact you about accessing your GEDCOM file. Regarding the file that is still in GEDCOM review, there are still a number of names that need to be fixed. One example is Mergijn (Marrechien) Claesen Claassen) - the Primary name field should contain their primary (usually birth) name and alternate spellings should be placed beneath in 'alt name' fields. This can be edited directly in GEDCOM review. (for example Jan Jans (Kikke(rt) of de Groot; Johannes (Joannes) Jacobus Erdt (Eert); Eva (Heva) Emanuel (Mendele) Meijer). If you have questions about this, just let me know. --Jennifer (JBS66) 09:31, 25 June 2013 (EDT)

Jennifer I received the Gedcom from Dallan. Ans I will have a look to the questions still remaining befor uploading again
