Next step: Review your GEDCOM [28 April 2011]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Steve _ Graham_s Family Trees.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Problems in gedcom file [1 May 2011]

Hello and welcome to WeRelate. Thank you for tending to your gedcom uploads so promptly. I am reviewing your file and I need to ask you to work on it a little more before we import it into the common database. Please understand that WeRelate is different from most web sites in that we are creating a single, shared database and also a web page is created for each person, family, source, etc. So they require more stringent review than a simple gedcom collection site would. We suggest that you review every page and note any problems. Fix them in your personal dataset and then create a new gedcom to upload. This is the easiest approach for most of us and it saves hours of editing later your you and others in the WeRelate community. Please pay particular attention to the items on the warning tab. Some of these indicate problems that can easily be fixed. You have duplicate family pages where the same children appear. We do not create duplicate pages in WeRelate. However, each 'marriage' should have it's own page. Thus children should not appear in more than one family. But a husband or wife may be in multiple families.

It appears that you have misunderstood the Family Match tab. I will try to explain. Since we do not wish to create duplicate pages, the system attempts to identify cases where your families MAY match an existing page. You are shown the information for the existing page along with your info. Select the match option where these are the same people. You will then have an chance to determine if you have new information to enter. Please take extra care when editing existing pages - especially prominent ones. You may wish to defer adding to them and edit these pages by hand later.

But if the suggested match is not the same family, select "Not a Match" and a new page will be created with your information.

You may find it most practical to create smaller gedcom files and do a few families or one line at a time. This approach is highly recommended by WeRelate regulars.
Thank you for your submission. If you have questions you can use the Support page found on the Help menu above right. If you prefer you can leave a message here, I will be watching. --Judy (jlanoux) 13:24, 1 May 2011 (EDT) (WeRelate volunteer)

Hello my name is Andrew Whitham originally from Rochdale , my grandmother was Ada Houldsworth. I think your grandfather may have been her brother who left the U.K for the states with his other brothers and sisters. Ada was the only that stayed in the U.K I think.
