Sources [14 September 2010]

Hello, I am a volunteer admin. I patrol new pages and help people learn to use WeRelate. Sources are reserved for references of general interest--books, websites, publications that contain genealogical data for more than one family. Sources relevant to only one person or one small family group should be noted on MySource pages. For instance, "The Dalton's of North Carolina" or "The descendant of John Dalton," the would be a Source. A book on John Dalton would be a MySource. I deleted your Source:About Superior Court Judge Griffith. It should be recreated as a MySource. I can't do this for you. If I create a MySource page, it is saved as one of my pages and not yours. If you need help please leave me a message.--sq 12:42, 14 September 2010 (EDT)

GEDCOM Export Ready [19 October 2012]

The GEDCOM for tree Default is ready to download. Click here.

Next step: Review your GEDCOM [29 October 2012]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded mgibeau.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Dominic Schmid and Anne Ries [30 October 2012]

Hello Ggpauly, I imported your most recent GEDCOM file, but noticed one family that contains impossible data. Please take a look at Family:Dominic Schmid and Anne Ries (1). The data shows both parents being born after their marriage date. Thank you, --Jennifer (JBS66) 09:58, 30 October 2012 (EDT)

Thanks Jennifer,

I corrected the marriage date & provided a source for the later date.

MySource:Personal Communication [2 November 2012]

I saw that you created a MySource page for MySource:Personal Communication. This MySource is missing your username in the title. I tried to rename it for you, but you already have a page with that title. When you have a moment, please visit the MySource:Personal Communication page, click on the Rename link, and in the To new title field enter MySource:Ggpauly/ followed by a new title. If you have any questions, just let me know. --Jennifer (JBS66) 13:46, 1 November 2012 (EDT)

Oops - I don't find a Rename link on that page. I was fussing trying to get rid of a reference to a Rockhold on the pers. comm. page that had nothing to do with the individual at hand.

I may have messed things up beyond my ability to put them straight. I apologize if I've foobarred something. I'll read about the various source collections before mucking around any more.

If there's anything else I can try let me know & I'll give it a shot,

George--Ggpauly 14:20, 1 November 2012 (EDT)

Nothing on a wiki gets too messed up! If you let me know what you'd like to name MySource:Personal Communication, I can rename it for you. --Jennifer (JBS66) 14:54, 1 November 2012 (EDT)

Well, maybe I need to start over at the design for this. What is the accepted werelate style of recording personal communications? My usual informal citation style is probably inadequate here, as there's no way for an interested scholar to refer back to a third party source. I was shooting for grouping all PCs together and somehow adding details to each. Should each communicant (eg Jean Pauly Jennings in this case) get her own page? Or should there be a page for each personal communication? How obvious will it be that I was the recipient of these PCs? Should that be reiterated for clarity in the far future?

Thanks,

George--Ggpauly 15:16, 1 November 2012 (EDT)

Hi Jennifer,

After reading the fine documentation I removed the reference to the bad MySource and replaced it with a citation-only source.

So instead of renaming the MySource, I'd prefer that it be deleted. Is this possible?

Thanks,

George--Ggpauly 17:38, 1 November 2012 (EDT)

I think citing as a citation-only works well in this case. If you had, say, a scan of a document, or an interview that would be referenced on multiple pages, then a MySource would be the best choice. You should be able to delete MySource:Personal Communication by clicking on that page, in the menu on the left click on More, then click on Delete. If you don't see a delete option, just let me know. I'm not entirely sure, but the system may prevent you from deleting a page that is directly placed in a namespace like that (though you can definitely delete MySource/Ggpauly pages). --Jennifer (JBS66) 07:06, 2 November 2012 (EDT)

Jennifer,

Thanks, it looks like I need some help with this. I don't have a delete link.

Also, I'd like some feedback on Pieter Claessen Wyckoff. I've had a note on his talk page -http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person_talk:Pieter_Wyckoff_%282%29 however this isn't getting any attention. I notice that you are interested in Dutch genealogy - perhaps you are interested. In any case I don't want to hijack this thread, how should I proceed with Pieter's problem?

Thanks! -George--ggp 08:48, 2 November 2012 (EDT)

I deleted the MySource page and responded to your question on the Pieter Wyckoff talk page. I think we're all set with this now. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask :) --Jennifer (JBS66) 17:46, 2 November 2012 (EDT)

etalbot.ged [6 November 2012]

Hi George, I took a look at your most recent GEDCOM. I can't process the file because there are no people or families that will be imported. All of the people in the file are marked as "early" individuals. Pages for people born before (I think the date is 1700 now) must be entered by hand. There are often a lot of duplicates with these early ancestors, and hand entering the data assures more careful data entry and source citations. Either I can remove the GEDCOM from the queue, or you can go to the Overview tab in GEDCOM review, and click the Remove the GEDCOM button. --Jennifer (JBS66) 13:30, 5 November 2012 (EST)

Hi Jennifer,

I checked the ancient Talbots, and my line is different from the existing lines on WeRelate. The existing lines are from the Shrewsbury Talbots (the rich and powerful ones):

http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Hugh_Talbot_%282%29 (Although Cawley warns that the Talbots were likely not Shrewsburies until the 15th C, http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/ENGLISH%20NOBILITY%20MEDIEVAL.htm#_Toc321390489)

My line diverges here, at Geoffrey b. abt 1080, brother of Hugh: https://paulyfamily.org/individual.php?pid=I2008&ged=paulyrockwell.ged

Overlapping are the few ancestors of the Hugh and Geoffrey, who were Normans. These have few sources cited, and some of the facts are questionable (for example, Normans born in England before 1066).

Is it possible to have an exception to the pre-1700 rule? There are 20 generations from Elizabeth Talbot to the Norman Invader. I've already hand-entered these individuals once. I can remove the overlapping 11th Century Normans from my Gedcom and work with the existing watchers of those individuals on the information I find questionable if that would be acceptable.

Thanks,

George--ggp 15:13, 5 November 2012 (EST)

I took a look at your file again, and many of the people were born before 1600, and even admins can't upload people born before that date via a gedcom. I understand this can be frustrating, but WR has had a number of problems in the past with gedcoms for people that go back to Adam and Eve, or that are taken from other poorly researched Ancestry trees. This cutoff date is really for the benefit of the entire WR community. I'm sorry that I can't be of more help in this situation. --Jennifer (JBS66) 11:15, 6 November 2012 (EST)
