Re: John Rowe (b. abt 1607) [29 September 2016]

I got your message regarding John Rowe and your line of descent. Yes, I am a direct descendant of John's, through his son Hugh and Hugh's first wife Rachel Langton. l also believe very strongly in the importance of good sources (one's based on research in original records, not just information copied from someone else). Anything else is at best wishful thinking, and can be quite misleading unless it is clearly labeled as coming from unproven/unreliable sources, and/or speculation.

With that in mind, I would note that there is no evidence that John's wife's family name is Jeggles. The only "source" for that claim seems to be Ramon Meyers Tingley, who provided no sources for any of his information, and has been found to be wrong in a surprisingly large number of instances, presumably reporting guesses as "fact". As such, he is becoming more and more discredited, and any information he provides needs to be supported by reference to other, reliable sources. In this sense, he is a prime example of what happens when people accept information that is not supported by reference to reliable sources. It introduces errors that become widely accepted without any supporting evidence.

You say that Bridget was born in Southwold, which is in Suffolk -- do you have a reliable source (i.e., one based on original records) for her birth? If so, it would be a hugh contribution to everyone researching this family if you could provide a citation to that source.

There are other problems with Bridget as Bridget Jeggles, as well. Her supposed father William Jeggles was in Salem by about 1636, and seems to have been associated with naval trade and fishing. John was still living in Lamerton, Devon in 1641, the son of a well-to-do land holder, and does not appear in the New England records until 1651, when he was already married and the father of two children. How John could have met and married a daughter of William Jeggles is a serious problem that requires explanation.

And yes, Mary Prince is Hugh's second wife. I have not pursued research on her and her children, as they are not my line.

Thanks for the offer of your information. It would be great to see that information, along with your sources (keeping in mind the need to reference reliable sources), posted for the individuals on WeRelate. Gayel --GayelKnott 19:34, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
