Abstracts

The following entries are found in the index of Kegley, 1982. The entry under "Probable Article" refers to the "person page" for the person currently thought to most likely to correspond to this entry. The volume focuses on land within the present boundaries of Pulaski County. Pulaski formed in 1839 frm Montgomery and Wythe. Wythe had split from Montgomery in 1790.Some entries, however, appear to be from other areas.

Given NamePageDateAbstractProbable ArticleNote
Bazeleel1061775Andrew. Branstetter, assignee of Conrod Sheply asignee of Bazeleel Maxwell, commisoners certificate executed for 130acres on head of Sugar Branch of Cripple Creek. Land settled 1773It is possible that Bazaleel was the original settler of the land; however, its also possible that he simply assigned is certificate to Sheply, who made the actual settlement.
David631782In assignment chain for land acquired by George martin SF Cripple Creek, surveyed 12 may 1775The 'David Maxwell' listed in the assignment chain in these records is probably the same person. Dates for the land records probably place him in the area 1774-1775. Whether he was in the area before or after that date is unknown.
David1111774-1775Survey track for George Martin, 45 Acres south end of Indian Ridge, David Maxwell in assignment chain of Commissioners certificate; land initially settled 1771.
David1141774Survey track for Aaron Collier, 273 ac S Fork Cripple Creek, David maxwell in assignment chain of Commissioners certificate; land initially settled 1774. To include 120 acres surveyed for David Maxwell in 1775, and settled 1774
David394after 1805 ?David Maxwell married Ruth Muirhead, dau of Enoch Moorehead (1755-1804) and Mary and moved to TNEnoch Morehead, per Kegly, 1982, settled on Peak Creek in modern Pulaski County. Its likely that this particular David Maxwell lived nearaby. Given Moreheads DOB of 1755, his daughter Ruth could scarcely have been born before c 1775. Since Ruth appears to be unmarried at the time of his death in 1804, it might be that she was not born until considerably later than 1775. In anycase, this implies that her future husband David Maxwell may have been a relatively young man in 1804. Which is to say, he's not the David Maxwell whose mentioned in the above assignment chains dating to c1774.

John185 jan 1775Nathaniel Davis secures eleven 400 acre tracks, in the Jessamine Creek watershed. One of them is described as adjacent to Jno. Maxwell including a sinking Spring.A "Jessamine Creek" is not listed in GNIS in VA. However, there is a Jessamine Creek in Kentucky. While that area lies outside of the region Kegley incudes in Volume 2, this is probably what this item is referring to.
