These data were drawn from a search of Ancestry's 1841 Census of Scotland and England. using the "exact match" for the surname. Results obtained under this search include "user amendations" changes driven by presumed mis-readings of the census record. In some cases these corrections are questionable, reflecting user belief more than fact, but in other cases these are useful adjustments of the data. In anycase, it was not practical to exclude these amendations. The data also include occurrence where the "surname" appears as a middle name, but again it was not practical to exclude these results. Since the "exact match" function was used, data for spelling variants of the surname, except as noted in user amendations, were usually not extracted. In two cases ("Houston/etc", and "Sifers/Cyphers" a suite of such variations were examined. Results from this examination of spelling variants is included to illustrate some of the variance involved.

Data

"Mixed" indicates that the difference in occurrence between England and Scotland was approximated the overall population ratio between the two countries. "Negligible indicates that the total population was less than 100 individuals, and is (somewhat arbitrarily) considered too small to be meaningful.
