Wapentakes, the Old Norse form of the Anglo-Saxon "hundred", are dealt with in Section 1.4, but Sections 1.1 (Hundred courts) and 1.2 (Administrative functions) deal with the concept and purposes of wapentakes along with those of "hundreds" used in English counties further south.

Ryedale Wapentake (#10 on the map) was located in the centre of the eastern half of the North Riding of Yorkshire. It was bounded by Langbargh Wapentake or Liberty on the north, Pickering Lythe on the east, Bulmer on the south, and Birdforth on the west.

It covers the very hilly sparsely populated area known as the North Yorkshire Moors.
