For a definition of "wapentake", see the article entitled Hundred (county division) in Wikipedia.
Wapentakes, the Old Norse form of the Anglo-Saxon "hundred", are dealt with in Section 1.4, but Sections 1.1 (Hundred courts) and 1.2 (Administrative functions) deal with the concept and purposes of wapentakes along with those of "hundreds" used in English counties further south.
Birdforth Wapentake is located in the North Riding of Yorkshire and was bounded by the wapentakes of Hallikeld on the west, Allerton on the north, Ryedale on the east, and Bulmer and a detached part of Hallikeld on the south.
The wapentake had two portions detached from the main area: Welbury and East Harlsey to the north, and South Otterington to the west.
The parishes of Felixkirk and Kilburn are considered to be part of the wapentake from a geographical point of view, but historically they were part of the Liberty of Ripon which covered a number of detached parishes most of which were in the West Riding of Yorkshire (as Ripon was until 1974). Felixkirk and Kilburn are not in the list provided by the Victoria County History of the North Riding.
