Monmouthshire (principal area) is a principal area and unitary authority in southeast Wales. The name derives from the historic county of Monmouthshire which existed until 1974. The present principal area covers the eastern 60% of the historic county. The largest town is Abergavenny. Other towns and large villages are Caldicot, Chepstow, Magor, Usk and the former County Borough of Monmouth. The current unitary authority of Monmouthshire was created on 1 April 1996 as a successor to the district of Monmouth in Gwent along with the community of Llanelly or Llanelli from Blaenau Gwent district. By area Monmouthshire Principal Area covers some 60% of the historic County of Monmouthshire, but only includes 20% of the population. In comparison to the pre-1974 areas it covers:
