Clarendon was established in 1664 as one of the three original counties of the English colony of Carolina (Province of Carolina). It has no parent county. Clarendon County only existed for 3 years before being abandoned as the result of sparse settlement, hostilities with the Indians, and a devastating hurricane.

Note: not to be confused with Clarendon County, South Carolina which existed 1785-1800 and had very different boundaries.
