Timeline

1629 - Sir Robert Heath, attorney general of King Charles I of England, is granted the Cape Fear region of America, incorporated as the Province of Carolina, but the charter is unrealized and eventually ruled invalid.

24 Mar 1663 - A new charter is issued to a group of eight English noblemen, the Lords Proprietors, by Charles II. These Lords Proprietors will control the colony for the next 66 years.

1707 - Province of Carolina becomes a colony of Great Britain.

1712 - Province of Carolina government is split into northern and southern divisions. They are often referred to as North Carolina or South Carolina, but they are not yet officially separate colonies, and both are still controlled by the same Lords Proprietors.

1729 - Province of Carolina is abolished. Land is officially divided into two British royal colonies:

  1. Province of North Carolina
  2. Province of South Carolina
