Timeline

1664 - Albemarle County is established as one of the three original counties in the English colony of Carolina. It includes the area "which lyeth on the nort[h] east or starboard side entering the river Chowan."

1668-1670 - Albemarle County establishes 4 precincts:

  1. Chowan
  2. Perquimans
  3. Pasquotank
  4. Currituck

1680 - Albemarle County renames its 4 precincts: Chowan becomes Shaftesbury ; Currituck becomes Carteret, Pasquotank becomes Albemarle, and Perquimans becomes Berkeley. The settlers object, and by the mid 1680s, they are all renamed back to their original names.

1707 - Albemarle County becomes located in the British colony of Carolina (Province of Carolina).

1722 - Albemarle County establishes Bertie Precinct from land in Chowan Precinct.

1729 - Albemarle County becomes located in the British colony of North Carolina (Province of North Carolina).

1738/39 - Albemarle County is abolished. All precincts within its borders become counties.
