October 28th 1916 "James was a son of William Turpel, the first schoolmaster who taught the children of the German settlers in the north suburbs. The minute book of the little German church was kept by him. The record book is one of the most precious treasures of St. George's church. It is a very interesting link between the St. George's of to-day and the first struggles of the infant congregation in their log church. William Turpel, the schoolmaster was born in Germany. James, his son, who was employed in the Dockyard, married a Miss Ring, a daughter of the lighthouse-keeper at Sambro Island. His son, James married Elizabeth Stevens of Musquodoboit Harbor, and his son, James Jeremiah married Miss Jane Ling of New Glasgow. Mrs. James J. Turpel resides at 96 North Albert St. Halifax, N.S. and furnished some this family history."

In 1891, the Very Rev. Francis Partridge, D.D., Dean of Fredericton Cathedral N.B. who preached a centennial commemoration sermon, commemorating the opening of St. George's church, received the following letter from a descendant in the fourth generation of the first schoolmaster of the "Old Dutch Church".

HALIFAX, N.S. July 20th, 1901 To the Very Rev. F. Partridge, D.D.

Sir, July 19th being the centennial commemoration of the opening of St. George's church, the undersigned, being present at the service, heard you give the history of the church. In it you mentioned the name of William Turpel, schoolmaster of the church and as James J. Turpel, being the fourth generation, and Maria N. Turpel the fifth generation, direct from William Turpel, still worshipping in St. George's church, Maria N. Turpel being the daughter of the late Jacob George Turpel, of the parish of St. James, Jeddore.
             Yours,
              JAMES J. TURPEL.

William Turpel, the schoolmaster, had land on Kent street (Old Kent Street) which was what is now the north end of Maitland street. In 1818 he sold this property for 500 pounds to Francis Robinson. The land was formerly known as George Eyes land. In the transfer of this property many names of old north-end families appear, such as Merkel, McRae, Moody, Munro, Brown, Collupy, Pace, Rhodes, Matthers.
