William Street was baptised on 19th February 1763 at Stotfold in Bedfordshire, son of Mary Street, formerly Elsom, and her husband Matthew Street, a labourer. When William was fourteen years old, his father died.

On 16th May 1796, aged 33, William married Mary Millard at Astwick, just north of Stotfold. At the time of their marriage he was living at Hinxworth, the neighbouring parish to the north-east of both Astwick and Stotfold. William’s older brother Matthew had moved to Hinxworth a few years earlier, and was one of the witnesses to William and Mary’s marriage.

William and Mary settled in Hinxworth after their marriage, having eight children baptised there between 1796 and 1814, although one died as a baby in 1807. Back in Stotfold, William’s mother died in 1798.

In a tax survey taken in 1798 William was said to rent a property at Hinxworth from one Edward Payne. Eight years later the enclosure award of Hinxworth parish shows that the only piece land owned by Edward Payne was a house on the south-eastern corner of the High Street and the road later called Chapel Street. It is therefore likely that this is where Mary and William lived.

In 1814, William was described as a labourer on his youngest daughter’s baptism record.

William died aged 57, and was buried on 9th March 1820 at Hinxworth. Mary survived him by 26 years.
