Mary Millard’s origins have yet to be established. The age given when she died suggests that she was born around 1772. Her first confirmed sighting is on 16th May 1796, when she married a labourer called William Street at Astwick in Bedfordshire.

William was from the neighbouring parish of Hinxworth in Hertfordshire, and they settled in Hinxworth after their marriage, having eight children baptised there between 1796 and 1814, although one died as a baby in 1807.

In a tax survey taken in 1798 William was said to rent a property at Hinxworth from one Edward Payne. Eight years later the enclosure award of Hinxworth parish shows that the only piece land owned by Edward Payne was a house on the south-eastern corner of the High Street and the road later called Chapel Street. It is therefore likely that this is where Mary and William lived.

William died in March 1820, aged 57.

The 1841 census finds Mary living at the big house of Clothall Bury, about seven miles south of Hinxworth, working as a servant for a farmer called William Sale. The Sale family were also landowners in Hinxworth.

Mary later returned to Hinxworth. She died there on 6th October 1846, when she was said to be 74 years old. She was said to have been in good health right up until her sudden death, so an inquest was held, finding that she had died “by visitation of God”.
