William Thomas Mitchell was baptised on 12th September 1853 at St Mary's Church in Warwick. He was the son of a laundress named Mary Ann (known as Ann) Mitchell, formerly King, and her husband Samuel Mitchell, a brewery maltster. William was the couple's second child, although their first daughter had died as a baby before William was born. In each census from 1861 to 1881 he appears living with his parents and siblings on Saltisford in Warwick, the main street leading out of town to the north-west. In both the 1861 and 1871 censuses he is listed as Thomas, suggesting he was known by his middle name. His father died in 1883.
William appears in the 1891 census working as a porter and still living with his mother, now at Whiles or Whites or Walls Court, off Parkes Street. In 1894, aged 41, he married a house maid named Annie Haley, who was 34. They had a daughter and two sons together between 1896 and 1900. William's mother died in 1896.
The 1901 and 1911 censuses both find William and Annie and their children at Walls Court or Terrace.
William died in 1931, aged 78. Annie survived him by just over four years.
