Emma Mitchell was born in 1864 in Warwick, the seventh (but fifth surviving) of eight children of a maltster named Samuel Mitchell and his wife Mary Ann (known as Ann) King. She spent her childhood living on the street in Warwick called Saltisford, being the main road out of the town towards Birmingham. She worked as a laundry maid.
At the age of 18 she married a soldier named George Wassell, who was seven years her senior. He was originally from Birmingham, but at the time of their marriage was based at Budbrooke Barracks, just outside Warwick. Their first child, Rose Ann, was baptised eight months later, but died when she was less than a year old. George then left the army and the couple then moved to Birmingham, where George worked as a porter and they had another three children. However, Emma appears to have died shortly after giving birth to her fourth child - her death was registered in March quarter 1889, whilst the baby was not baptised until the May. She was 24.
After Emma's death, George and the eldest two surviving children lived in Birmingham, whilst the youngest went to live in Warwick with Emma's mother and childless sister Fanny.
