Fanny Mitchell was born in 1857 in Warwick and baptised there at St Mary's Church on 6th December 1857. She was the daughter of a laundress named Mary Ann (known as Ann) Mitchell, formerly King, and her husband Samuel Mitchell, a maltster in a brewery. The 1861 and 1871 censuses find Fanny living with her parents and siblings on Saltisford, the main street leading out of Warwick to the north-west.
On 26th February 1877, Fanny married an Alfred Hill at Leamington. Alfred Hill often used his stepfather's surname of Goodman, and Fanny similarly often called herself Fanny Goodman. They returned to Warwick to live, and do not appear to have had any children. The 1881 census finds Alfred and Fanny living at 5 Gents Buildings, with Fanny working as a laundress, whilst Alfred was a general labourer. Fanny's father Samuel died in 1883.
Fanny's sister Emma died in 1889 either giving birth to a son named George Wassell or shortly afterwards. The 1891 census finds young George living with Fanny and Alfred and Fanny's mother and eldest brother in a three roomed house on Parkes Street in Warwick.
Alfred Hill died in 1892, aged 47. Fanny continued to live with her mother at Parkes Street until after her mother's death there in 1896, for which Fanny was the informant.
Some time between 1896 and 1901 Fanny left Warwick and moved ten miles north to Coventry, taking her young nephew George Wassell with her. The 1901 census finds Fanny and George lodging at 50 New Buildings in Coventry. On Christmas Day 1902, aged 45, Fanny married a John Sparkes, who was a 33 year old farm labourer from Coventry.
Fanny died early in 1910, aged 52. John Sparkes only survived her by a few months and died later that year, aged 41.
