John Sparkes was born on 1st August 1869 at Coventry in Warwickshire, son of a labourer named Thomas Sparkes and his wife Mary Ann. John appears in the 1871 census living with his parents and siblings. By 1881 John was living in a large industrial school in Birmingham. He later returned to Coventry, appearing there in the 1901 census working as a farm labourer and living with his brother Harry's family.

On Christmas Day 1902, aged 33, John married a widow named Fanny Hill, formerly Mitchell. She was already 45 when they married, and they do not appear to have had any children.

Fanny died early in 1910, aged 52. John survived her by just a few months, and died later in 1910, aged 41.
