Alfred Hill was born in the town of Stratford upon Avon in Warwickshire in 1844, the son of a bailiff named Benjamin Sutton Hill and his wife Sarah Ann. When Alfred was six years old, his father died. His mother remarried in 1861 to a Charles James Goodman. Alfred subsequently used his stepfather's surname for some purposes - whilst he married and died as Hill, he appears in the 1881 and 1891 censuses as Goodman.
In 1877, aged 32, Alfred married Fanny Mitchell from Warwick. They returned to Warwick and lived close to or with her family. Alfred and Fanny appear not to have had any children, although they did take in Fanny's nephew George Wassell, son of Fanny's sister Emma, who had died either giving birth to George or immediately afterwards.
Alfred died in 1892, aged 47.
