Childhood
Samuel Mitchell was baptised on 7th October 1827 at the parish church of St Nicholas in Warwick. He was the third of seven children of Mary Mitchell, formerly Piggot, and her husband William Mitchell. At the time of Samuel's baptism they family was living at St John's Place and William was working as a brick maker. Although Samuel was their third child, his older brother had died before Samuel was born, whilst his older sister died less than four months after Samuel's baptism, leaving him the eldest child who survived to adulthood. His parents had another four children after Samuel. Judging by the baptisms of Samuel's younger siblings, the family moved around within Warwick quite frequently, living in several different streets.
At the time of the 1841 census, Samuel was living with his parents and his four younger siblings at Satchell Court off Bowling Green Street. Ten years later, in the 1851 census, exactly the same family group was living at Pigwell Lane. By this time both Samuel and his father William were working as maltsters in the brewing industry.
Adulthood
Later that year, on 14th October 1851, aged 24, Samuel married a Mary Ann (known as Ann) King. She had been baptised in Warwick a few months before him, so they were very close contemporaries of each other. Six months after their marriage they had a daughter named Harriet, but sadly she died as a baby less than three months after her baptism. In 1853 they had a son named William Thomas, followed in 1855 by a son named Alfred, a daughter named Fanny in 1857 and a son named John in 1860.
The 1861 census finds Samuel and Ann and their four children living at Saltisford. Curiously, they had a Sarah Bromage living with them who was described as 'mother in law', but no plausible explanation for such a relationship has been established. If the age quoted for this Sarah Bromage was correct, she was probably too young to be either Samuel's or Ann's mothers, whilst there is good evidence that both their real mothers were still alive at this time.
In 1862 Samuel and Ann had a son named Harry, but sadly he died when he was nine months old. They then had a daughter named Emma in 1864 and a daughter named Harriet Elizabeth in 1867. In 1869, Samuel's mother Mary died, after which Samuel's father William went to live with Samuel's brother Thomas.
The 1871 census finds Samuel and Ann and their six children living at 4 Saltisford Buildings. At this time Samuel was described as an agricultural labourer. In 1873 Samuel and Ann's youngest daughter, Harriet Elizabeth, died aged six years old. Therefore although they had had eight children, only five survived to adulthood. Samuel's father William died in 1874.
By 1875 Samuel was working back at the brewery. In that year he and Ann had trouble with their twenty year old son Alfred. The family had taken in a lodger, and Alfred claimed that Samuel and Ann thought more of the lodger than they did their own children. After getting drunk one night in August, Alfred tried to fight Samuel, broke a window and was threatening to his mother and the lodger. Alfred was arrested and brought before the magistrate to be bound over to keep the peace, with Ann giving evidence against him. Alfred agreed to leave Warwick, which he did, going to work on the canals in Birmingham.
In 1877, Samuel's daughter Fanny married a man named Alfred Hill. They did not have any children. The 1881 census finds Samuel and Ann (who was now working as a laundress) living at 42 Saltisford, with two of their five surviving children living with them. In 1882 Samuel's daughter Emma married a man named George Wassell.
Samuel died on 4th April 1883 at home at 42 Saltisford. He was 55 years old when he died, and had lived his entire life in Warwick. He did not quite make it to see his first grandchild: his daughter Emma's first child was baptised the following month. Samuel's wife Ann survived him by thirteen years.
