William Mitchell was born around 1794 at Alcester in Warwickshire, son of a gardener called Thomas Mitchell and his wife Elizabeth. William was not baptised until he was about four years old, being baptised at Alcester alongside two sisters, Jane and Alice.

William’s next sighting is on 21st February 1819, when he married Mary Ann Piggot in the county town of Warwick, about fifteen miles east of Alcester.

William and Mary went on to have seven children together between 1821 and 1839, all born in Warwick. William was described as a brick maker on some of their children’s baptism records and a labourer on others. Their eldest child died in 1826 when he was only four or five years old, whilst staying with Mary’s sister Elizabeth, who had moved to Birmingham. William and Mary’s second child died when she was only four years old in 1828. William and Mary’s other five children all lived to adulthood.

The addresses given for the family suggest they moved around within Warwick frequently, being listed at Friar’s Lane in 1821, Smith Street in 1824, St John’s Place in 1827, Cotton End in 1828 and 1829, Smith Street again in 1832, Market Street in 1834 and Bowling Green Street in 1839.

Back in Alcester, William’s mother died in 1827, and his father died in 1832 (when he was said to be a remarkable 95 years old).

The 1841 census finds William, Mary and some of their children living at Satchell Court on Bowling Green Street in Warwick. By 1851 they had moved to Pigwell Lane, and William was working as a maltster. The 1861 census still described William as a maltster, and lists the family on Saltisford, the main road out of Warwick to the north-west.

In 1862, William’s daughter Emma was admitted to the Warwick County Asylum. She spent six months there until her death in January 1863, aged about 31.

Mary died in 1869, aged about 74. William survived her by five years. He appears in the 1871 census living with his son Thomas and his family on Saltisford. William died on 26th December 1874, aged about eighty.

    Baptized 1798 / December 26: Jane D[aughter] & William Son & Alice D[aughter] of Thomas & Eliz[abet]h Mitchell

Whilst no named connection has been found, this baptism has been linked to the William who married Mary Piggot on the basis that it is in the parish he consistently gave as his birthplace and around the right time. No evidence has been found to suggest that the William baptised in 1798 died young or married anyone else.
