Facts and Events
Elizabeth’s maiden name and origins have yet to be established. The age given when she died suggests she was born around 1757. Sometime between 1782 and 1798 Elizabeth married Thomas Mitchell, a farm servant and gardener, at Studley in Warwickshire, although the marriage records there for that period appear to be partially lost and their marriage was presumably in one of the missing periods. He was a widower and about twenty years her senior. He had lived for some years in the small town of Alcester, a little way south of Studley, and Elizabeth and Thomas settled there after their marriage. Elizabeth and Thomas went on to have three children together, who were all baptised at Alcester on 26th December 1798. Judging by the ages these three children later quoted for themselves in the censuses, it is likely that Jane was the eldest followed by William then Alice, which is also the order they are listed on the baptism record. Elizabeth lived to see the three children baptised in 1798 all married. Between them they produced 19 grandchildren for her, although only eight of these were born in her lifetime, and three of those eight died young within Elizabeth’s lifetime. Elizabeth died in 1827, when she was said to be seventy years old. She was buried at Alcester on 27th July 1827. Thomas survived her by five years. References
