Florence Beatrice Wassell was born in Birmingham in 1887, daughter of a laundress named Emma Wassell, formerly Mitchell, and her husband George Wassell, a porter. When Florence was less than two years old her mother Emma died, aged just 24. The 1891 census finds Florence living with her father and brother in Aston, in the suburbs of Birmingham. In 1901, Florence was still living with her father and was now described as a warehouse girl in an electro plate manufacturers.

In 1908, aged 21, Florence married a carptner named Thomas Wilcox. By the time of the 1911 census they had had two children together. The 1911 census finds Florence, Thomas and their two chlidren living with Florence's father and siblings in a two roomed house at 42 Ryder Street in Birmingham. Florence has yet to be researched after 1911.
