George Thomas Wassell was born in about 1889. His exact date of birth is unknown, as his birth does not appear to have been registered. His mother Emma Wassell, formerly Mitchell, appears to have died either giving birth to George or shortly afterwards; her death was registered in the January - March quarter of 1889, whilst George was not baptised until the May of that year. George consistently gave his place of birth as Birmingham, which is where his mother died. It would appear that straight after George's mother's death he moved to live with his maternal grandmother's family in Warwick, which is where he was baptised on 5th May 1889. George's father was George Wassell, a silversmith's porter.
In the 1891 census, George was living with his grandmother and two of his late mother's siblings, his aunt Fanny and uncle William, on Parkes Street in Warwick. George's father and two surviving siblings were living in Birmingham. In 1896, George's grandmother died, after which George appears to have continued living with his aunt Fanny. The 1901 census finds George and Fanny lodging together in Coventry. At some point between 1901 and 1911, George moved to live with his father, possibly after his aunt Fanny remarried in 1902 or her death in 1910. The 1911 census finds George working as a silversmith and living at 42 Ryder Street in Birmingham, a four roomed house occupied by seven people - George's father, brother, George, his brother-in-law, sister and two young nieces (his sister's daughters).
George has yet to be researched after 1911.
