William Marshall was baptised on 24th July 1831 at Hatfield in Hertfordshire, son of Hannah Marshall, formerly Arnold, and her husband James Marshall, an agricultural labourer. William appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings at Mill Green in Hertfordshire. Some time between 1841 and 1851 William's parents left Hatfield and moved several miles away to Sarratt. William and his brother Joseph stayed behind in Hatfield, where they both appear in the 1851 census lodging at Mill Green and working as agricultural labourers.

William was married in 1854 in the Hatfield area to a Caroline Impey, who was originally from Whitchurch in Buckinghamshire. Immediately after their marriage they moved to near William's parents at Sarratt, then to nearby Micklefield Green in the parish of Rickmansworth. The 1861 census finds William and Caroline living there with four children. William was working as a gardener. In 1871 the family was back in Sarratt at Rose Hall, with William still working as a gardener.

William died shortly after the 1871 census, aged just 39. Caroline stayed in Sarratt, appearing there in the 1881 census with some of her children.
