Joseph Marshall was baptised on 19th April 1829 at Hatfield in Hertfordshire, son of Hannah Marshall, formerly Arnold, and her husband James Marshall, an agricultural labourer. Joseph appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings at Mill Green in Hatfield. Some time between 1841 and 1851, Joseph's parents left Hatfield and moved away to Sarratt, near Watford. Joseph and his brother William stayed behind in Hatfield, appearing together in the 1851 census lodging together at Mill Green and both working as agricultural labourers.

Joseph was married in 1857, aged 28, to Sarah Elizabeth Rumney, who was about 23 and also from Hatfield. They stayed in Hatfield, having at least five children together. Joseph worked variously as a railway labourer and an agricultural labourer. Each census from 1861 to 1901 finds Joseph, Sarah and their children at a different address within the town of Hatfield. In 1901 they also had their daughter's husband and a granddaughter living with them.

Joseph died in 1909, aged 80. Sarah outlived him by about two years.
