Eliza Marshall was baptised on 8th November 1835 at Hatfield in Hertfordshire. She was the youngest daughter of Hannah Marshall, formerly Arnold, and her husband James Marshall, an agricultural labourer. Eliza appears in the 1841 census living with her parents and siblings at Mill Green in Hatfield.

Some time between 1841 and 1851 Eliza and her parents moved from Hatfield to Sarratt, appearing there in the 1851 census. Eliza was married at Sarratt on 28th April 1856, aged 20, to a Robert Jeffs. He was from the neighbouring town of Watford, and the 1861 census finds Eliza, Robert and three daughters living at Bridge Place in Watford. At this time Robert was working as a labourer in an ironworks.

Eliza and Robert left Watford in the late 1860s, moving to the neighbouring parish of Aldenham, where Robert became a coachman to the vicar. Both the 1871 and 1881 censuses find Eliza and Robert living at the coachman's house at Aldenham Vicarage. Eliza and Robert appear to have had about eight children together.

Robert died in 1884. After his death Eliza moved to London, living at 30 St Gothards Road in Norwood, where she occupied one or two rooms within the house and supported herself by working as a dressmaker. Eliza died in south London in 1908, aged 72, having outlived Robert by 24 years.
