Bill went to Haverford College, PA. In World War II he was a Lt. in the Army in cryptography. After marrying Eleanor (a member of the Kellogg family) on 27 Dec 1945 they moved to New Haven, CT, where Bill worked for Asgrow Seed Co. until his retirement. He grew vegetables for free distribution to soup kitchens, using volunteer labor, and was honored for this work on television.

As of 2021 three sons have passed away and three daughters are living.
