Facts and Events
I believe Jane Johnston, Stanton's widow, and her family moved to Vermilion Co. after Stanton died. There are graves in the Union Rankin Cemetery in that county with names of George S. Johnston, John T. Johnston and William D. (which should be O if it's our William) Johnston. I can't prove these our our Johnstons yet. Also, see noted for Sarah Duff Johnston. The William D. Johnston buried in the Union Rankin Cemetery is our William O. I looked through his pension papers and the death date matches that of the cemetery. He was with the OH 128th. The papers also state that he and Sarah came to Butler Township, Vermilion Co., IL in 1868. The pension papers have an affidavit stating that William's brother, Scott, is the administrator of his estate.1 900 census shows him to be a hotel proprietor in Butler Township, Vermilion Co., IL. Both daughters are gone but a nephew, Walter L. Johnston, is living with them. References
