His parents were William and Lucy Hawkins. Considering I cannot find him on the 1870 census, I wonder if he returned to England after Ann died, married Catherine, and remained in England for a few years.

William applied for naturalization in Jackson County 4 Oct 1856. His brother George applied 6 Apr 1857.

From Barbara Hawkins

William came to Michigan in 1850 with his brother George W. He earned enough to send for his wife, Ann Willmore, and family in 1853.

(???) The Jackson City Directory of 1905 shows William in Section 18 and 30. In 1908 and 1910, he owned 30 acres in Section 18, Leoni Twp with a value of $900.

Winslow is a small town of immense charm and character. The most prominent building is Winslow Hall, designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the early 18th century.

Although mainly Georgian, the town has a long history - Offa (of the Dyke - see Offas Dyke Footpath) is said to have stayed here in AD 752. Market Day is Wednesday.

Legend has it that King Offa of Mercia (one of the former Kingdoms of Britain) once had a Palace in Winslow during the 8th Century AD. The site of this is thought to be on the hill at the East end of Sheep Street. Winslow was also recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086AD at the time of William the Conquerer. It is also known that the Abbott of St Albans was placed in charge of Winslow and it's land by King Offa, and that Winslow had a weekly market from 1235 onwards after a Market Charter was granted by King Henry III. This is some of the earliest recorded information about Winslow.

A Church was first built around 1260, St Laurence Church. The Church over the years was extended, repaired, restored, and is still there today. A Manor House also appeared about this time, and although this doesn't exist anymore, the site of it was at the West end of Sheep Street, not far from the more recent and still in existence Winslow Hall. Built around 1700, Winslow Hall was designed by Sir Christopher Wren.

In the 1700's, enclosure laws meant that most of the land was hedged and agricultural landscapes across the country began to change. In other parts of Britain the landscape was changing even more dramatically as the Industrial Revolution was beginning. Winslow however, remained a mainly agricultural community, but with the growth of industry elsewhere it wasn't long before the railways came to the town. By 1851 a railway line was built from Oxford to Bletchley passing through Winslow.
