Facts and Events
An 1880 census for Patrick Gap, Lawrence, KY shows a 15 year old, William living with Jesse Maynard and his family. William was a laborer. This census says William was born in WV not KY. The Maynards lived just down the street from the Hardwick's who had 2 daughters - one was Victoria, his future wife. (In 1870 census William is not with the Maynards.) By 1900 Jesse is living in Mingo, WV with his wife Sarah and daughter Alice. Jesse and Sarah Maynard again show up on a 1920 KY census 2 houses away from Victoria' Hardwick's parents. On the 1910 census William is 42 years old and a widow living in Glade, Webster, West Virginia. His last name is spelled with one M. (His son James spelled his name with two M's.) William was a farmer and owned his own farm. He could read and write. Living with him were Hattie (age 24 and married), Billie (age 17 and single), daughter Vergie (age 15 and single), granddaughter Ethel Chapins (age 9) Hattie's daughter, and a boarder John Hoover. Sometime before the 1920 census his daughter Hattie came back from Ohio and lived with her father until he died. The census shows him living with Hattie and a Madge. Hattie (Florence) is listed as single. Dad is listed as married (no wife listed). Madge is listed as his 15-yr old daughter. (This is the first that a Madge enters the records.) After William's death in 1939, Hattie went back to Gallipolis, Gallia, Ohio.
