In 1920 he lived with his brother George and Lola Jane. James' name is spelled with one M on this census. He rented his home and was a laborer in the lumber yard.

On the 1930 census it shows he remains at the lumber yard.

James registered for WWII in 1942, he was not called to serve.

Eventually James and Jane moved to Bergoo, WV and then to Rainelle, WV where he died after a short illness.
