_DCAUSE: Complications of diabetes _PHOTO: William G. Conley, Jr. attended Kingwood schools, but was forced to drop out of high school after his father was accidentally struck by a train and became disabled. He worked at a local cement plant in Manheim, WV, and later was employed at the Wilmouth and 'Lucky Jack' tipples at Snyder's Crossing. After his marriage to Flora Ellen Sisler, he worked for the W. Va. Northern Railroad unloading freight and baggage. He moved into a home on Murdock Street in Kingwood, where his two children were born. He registered for the draft for WW I on June 5, 1917, but did not have to serve due to having to support his family at the time. He was working for the Deaker Hill Coal Company as a "tipple man." He was described as being a man of medium height and weight, having blue eyes and brown hair. He loved to hunt and fish and is remembered for playing his harmonica. During the Depression, he kept $750 inside a 'Wheeler's Graded Reader," and with another $600 from his son, Ross, helped finance Conley's Market. In the 1930 US Census, William was listed as working for the "County Road" as a laborer. Both Fred and Ross were living at home at that time. He was baptized by M. W. Rider into the Methodist Church on 2/28/1888. (PC Methodist records). He developed complications of diabetes mellitus and was buried in the Maplewood Cemetery in Kingwood on 4/14/1956. |
