Mustered Sept. 24, 1861. Discharged for medical reason Feb. 28, 1863, Keokuk, Iowa.

He came by covered wagon to Nebraska and was in Harlan County at the time of the 1880 census. Thereafter, he moved to Custer County and homesteaded a few miles northwest of where Highway 183 now crosses the South Loup River. Sod was cut from the native prairie and lived in a sod house for a number of years. John Aaron Jennings family were close neighbors. The family attended Second Eudell Church nearby and is buried in the Eudell (Box Elder) Cemetery. To get to the Cumro site, take highway 183 north past the South Loup River until you see the sign directing you to Cumro. Cumro no longer exists, there is a historical marker telling about the town. At the crossroads, take the gravel road north a mile or so, until you see the Box Elder Cemetery. The Cemetery was in good order in 2003 when visited by Roger D. Robinson and spouse. Pictures were taken, but the carving in the stone did not appear clear because of the direct, bright sunlight that day.
