Calkins in Sawtelle, Calif., and he traveled to Seattle with her so that she would not have to travel alone. For some reason they decided to get married on April 18, 1917 in Seattle, King Co., WA. They lived together until June 20, 1917, when she went to Canada to assist her ailing sister. Alfred returned to Sawtelle, CA., and when Lucy returned from Canada, Alfred didn't want anything to do with her and eventually filed for a divorce and then withdrew the action when Lucy claimed that he deserted her on October 26, 1917. In those days, a man could go to jail for deserting his wife. Apparently he withdrew the divorce and then denied they were ever married and later said that she tricked him into marriage so she could get one half of his pension. Alfred had returned to Sawtelle and was in the company of Lizzie Barnhardt, widow of Reuben Barnhardt, a fellow Civil War pal. Gordon, Deputy Clerk [edit] Landlady Steals PantsNEWSPAPER ARTICLE, ABOUT 1917, in Sawtelle, CA. newspaper OLD SOLDIER TELLS STORY OF DETENTION AFTER NOTE SMUGGLED TO BEACH POLICE Held a prisoner in the bedroom of his boarding house, either for alleged non-payment of his board bill or because he persisted in courtly attention to the winsome daughter of the landlady, E. E. Robinson, aged Civil War veteran, called the Santa Monica police today when he shied a note from the window of his temporary prison into the cap of a waiting boy. He then instructed the boy to run to the officers. A little later when the Officer arrived at the home of Mrs Mary Bernhart on Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica, they found the aged war veteran in slippers and a bathrobe smoking a pipe in his bedroom. PANTS GONE ALSO. On the landlady's side of the locked bedroom door, Mrs Bernhart declared that the veteran of Shilo was shy quite a bit on his board bill and that she had taken the precaution to deprive him of part of his garments and lock the door until Robinson could provide the necessary wherewith all to pay. PLEADS FOR PANTS Robinson crossed his unclad knees, sucked on a pipe and lamented the loss of his pants when Officer Shannon persuaded the landlady to allow him to interview the veteran inmate of this modern "Libby" prison. "I want my pants", was his first remark. Then following a series of ejaculations that Shannon noted on his police report with dots, dashes and asterisks. "Army Language" said the veteran, taking a deep draw on the pipe when the Officer looked astonished. Then Robinson told his story. It differed greatly from that told by Mrs. Barnhart. At least so the officers report showed at the police station. Robinson said that Mrs Bernhart (I cannot read the balance of the paragraph as the print is too dark) PRETTY GIRL TOO. Then the officer made arrangements to take the veteran of Shilo to the soldiers' home and advised Mrs. Bernhart to appeal to the justice court for a writ of attachment to satisfy her claim against the ex-soldier. "I'll sue him for that board bill", she declared as Robinson departed, completely "panted" so far as his legs were concerned.
