Walter Savage was born on 1st April 1907 at Dartford in Kent, son of Rosa Savage, formerly Godsmark, and her husband Walter Edmund Savage, a chemical packer. Young Walter was the youngest of seven children, although the eldest child (another Walter) had died before this Walter was born.

The 1911 census finds Walter living with his parents and siblings at 195 Fulwich Road in Dartford. The family stayed at 195 Fulwich Road through the First World War and into the 1920s; they were still living there in 1923 when Walter's father died.

Walter was married in 1934, aged 27, to Marjorie Edna Challis. The 1939 Register, taken at the outbreak of the Second World War, finds Walter and Marjorie living in Dartford together. They do not appear to have had any children.

Walter's mother died in 1952.

Immediately before his death, Walter was living at 1 Priory Close in Dartford. He died on 8th September 1971, aged 64. His estate was valued at £9,891, suggesting that he probably owned the house. Marjorie survived him by over eighteen years.
