Childhood

Alfred Edmund Savage was born on 17th January 1903 at 24 Hartham Road, Tottenham, Middlesex, in the northern suburbs of London. He was the fifth of seven children of Rosa Savage, formerly Godsmark, and her husband Walter Edmund Savage, a chemical packer. Alfred was apparently given the nickname 'Taddy' (short for tadpole) from an early age. When Alfred was about a year old his eldest brother died aged ten. Shortly afterwards the family left Tottenham and moved to Dartford in Kent, where Alfred's two younger siblings were born in 1905 and 1907.

The 1911 census finds Alfred living with his parents and siblings at 195 Fulwich Road in Dartford. The family stayed there through the First World War and until at least the mid 1920s. Alfred's father died in 1923.

Adulthood

On 6th July 1925, aged 22, Alfred married a nurse named Alice Meekins. By this time Alfred was working as an "engineer's turner". Alfred and Alice had two daughters and a son between 1925 and 1940, but the boy died young in 1941. They lived at 3 Hazel Road in Dartford from shortly after their marriage.

The 1939 Register, taken at the outbreak of the Second World War finds Alice and Alfred living at 3 Hazel Road with their children. Alfred was described as an engineer turner, working with lathes.

Alfred and Alice had four grandchildren, all born in the late 1940s and early 1950s in the Dartford area. Alfred's mother died in Dartford in 1952.

Alfred died at home at 3 Hazel Road on 10th March 1964, having been suffering with bronchial cancer. He was 61 years old. Alice survived him by sixteen years.
